Collapses: View of a Post-Apocalyptic World

Author’s Journey

Passionate about social anticipation and possible futures, my writing journey began about ten years ago with the publication of a novel, « Pèlerinage à Compostelle – Encounters in My Father’s Footsteps, » a fiction that allowed me to talk about one of my passions: hiking.

The writing process was established. My readings on the theme of collapsology naturally led to writing. The Bradbury project opened the way for me to write short stories. This is how the EFFONDREMENTS project was born.

I have always been fascinated by fiction’s ability to explore the blind spots of our collective reality, to question our certainties, and to imagine what our world of tomorrow could be. This prospective approach gradually focused on questions of systemic collapse, convinced that literature can play an essential role in mentally and emotionally preparing us for the upheavals to come.

Genesis of the « EFFONDREMENTS » Project

The « EFFONDREMENTS » project was born from a simple observation: the proliferation of warning signs concerning the stability of our complex industrial societies. Rather than succumbing to paralyzing anxiety in the face of these prospects, I chose to use fiction as a tool for exploration and reflection.

Each short story in this series addresses a specific collapse scenario, allowing us collectively to « visit » these possible futures without directly experiencing them. It is not about prophesying the end of the world, but about carefully and sensitively examining how we might navigate these major crises, how they would transform our daily lives, our social relationships, and our relationship with the world.

These narratives are rooted in meticulous research, encompassing scientific, sociological, and historical aspects. They are based on observable trends, documented vulnerabilities, and recurrent human mechanisms in the face of upheavals.

Inspiration from the Works of Yves Cochet

The « EFFONDREMENTS » collection is a continuation of the reflections developed by Yves Cochet in his foundational work « Facing Collapse, An Essay on Collapsology ». His systemic and multidisciplinary approach has been an essential intellectual compass for structuring this literary project.

Collapsology, this transdisciplinary study of the collapse of industrial societies and what might follow, offers a rich conceptual framework for fiction. It invites us to consider the interdependencies between the different dimensions of our societies – ecological, energy, economic, political, social, and cultural.

While Yves Cochet’s works rigorously analyze the mechanisms and probabilities of collapse, my literary project seeks to give flesh and soul to these scenarios, to embody them in individual and collective destinies, and to explore their human dimension. It also aims to highlight the intelligence and adaptation of societies in the face of upheavals.

Vision and Objectives of the Series

« EFFONDREMENTS » pursues several complementary objectives:

Raise Awareness Without Terrifying – The series seeks to make difficult realities tangible without succumbing to paralyzing catastrophism. It is about embracing these possibilities to better prepare for them.

Stimulate Adaptive Imagination – By exploring various scenarios, these short stories invite us to develop our mental adaptability in the face of uncertain futures.

Rediscover the Essentials – Through the trials faced by the characters, these narratives question what truly constitutes the essentials of our lives: human relationships, solidarity, knowledge transfer, connection to living things.

Cultivate Lucid Hope – Each short story concludes on a note of hope or an opening, not out of naivety, but from the conviction that humanity possesses immense resources of resilience and creativity.

Nourish Public Debate – By allowing these scenarios to be seen and felt, the series aims to enrich our collective conversation about the choices available to us today.

I conceive of these narratives as narrative laboratories where we can collectively experience, by proxy, the challenges that the future might hold for us. By reading these short stories, the reader becomes an explorer of possible futures, developing their own reflection on what it means to inhabit a world undergoing profound transformation.

This series is also an invitation to dialogue. This blog constitutes a space for exchange where we can collectively extend this essential reflection on the fragilities and resilience capacities of our societies.

Welcome to this exploration of « COLLAPSES » – in the plural, because the paths are multiple, both in decline and in reconstruction.
